Traveling With Extensions (Everything You Need to Know)

It’s almost summer – which means it’s time for those weekend getaways. Whether you’re traveling to the big city or hitting your favorite beach town, these are my care tips for traveling with extensions.

1. PACK YOUR BEST HAIRCARE

Due to changes in minerals, the water in your hotel is likely different than the water your hair is used to. Speaking from experience, hotel water is usually my arch nemesis. Try to avoid washing your hair if it’s a weekend trip, but if you do, be sure to pack your most conditioning hair products. I always pack my Iles Formula Hair 3-Step System for added care and moisture. This set comes with shampoo, conditioner, and (my favorite!) a moisturizing serum. The serum will protect your hair from all the elements (think: fume-filled city air or the blazing hot sun).

2. PROTECT BEFORE THE POOL

The chlorine in pools is not great for your extensions – especially for the blondes (if you know, you know). If you do plan on getting your hair wet, make sure to wet your hair first with a bottle of water. Your hair will soak up the clean water before the chlorine – think of it as a protective barrier. Next step? Coat with the conditioner from the Iles Formula Hair 3-Step System to prevent any drying from the chlorine.

3. SCREEN UR SUNSCREENS YO

Blondes – you’ve probably discovered at one point in your life that sunscreen will turn your extensions a pink salmon color. If you are lucky enough to have made it this far, take precaution and use mineral sunscreen only! My favorite is the Bare Republic (**NEEDS TO BE ADDED TO AMAZON SHOP)  mineral sunscreen – it is safe on your hair and great for your skin.

4. BYOB (BRING YOUR OWN BLOWDRYER)

Ladies – always BYOB! The hair dryers in hotels are often ancient and really rough on the hair. It may seem like no big deal, but even one blow dry with one of those can do some damage to the hair. I always bring my Dry Bar Mini – it’s compact but just easy on the hair as their standard dryer. You’ll also want to bring your brush (my personal favorite is the Dry Bar Detangling Brush) . There’s nothing worse than getting out of the shower and realizing you don’t have your brush. I also always pack a microfiber towel (I love this one) (**NEEDS TO BE ADDED TO AMAZON SHOP)  to pull back my hair whenever applying makeup, sunscreen, or self tanner.

5. HAVE FUN WITH WITH IT

You're on vacay! Have fun with your hair. This is the perfect time to play with your long hair. Think: butterfly clips, braids, hair rings, and more).
