Q&A With Regina Marie

Q: Why doesn’t my curl last as long when I do it at home?

A: I get this question all the time – so don’t worry, you’re not alone. Here are my top 3 tips for getting salon quality curls at home.

#1 Slow It Down

One of the biggest tips I have is to curl smaller sections of your hair. While this will take more time, the smaller the sections of hair, the tighter the curl. Turn down the heat on your hot tool (here’s my personal favorite from Bio Iconic) and hold it a little bit longer. This will give you a bit more control. Don’t be alarmed if they are too curly for your liking at first – they’ll fall!

#2 Don’t Forget to Set

Let your curls set. Have you ever wondered why there’s a cool setting on your blow dryer? The cool setting freezes the style in place. The same goes for curling. To set your curls, do not brush them out until they are cool to the touch. Dropping the curl into the palm of your hand and holding it for a few seconds while it cools can help too – but be careful!

#3 Products, Products, Products!

Prep and post-prep always! Before blow drying, add a leave in treatment so your hair is it’s best state before curling – we love this one from Iles Formula. Before curling and after curling, spray a lightweight flexible hold hairspray to help your curl keep its shape. Finish with a texture spray like this one from IKG. Voila! Follow these steps and you’ll get your perfect hold.
