Caring For Your Natural Hair + Hair Extensions in the Winter Months

TAKE CARE.

CARING FOR YOUR NATURAL HAIR + HAIR EXTENSIONS IN THE WINTER MONTHS.

The cold winters can be really harsh on your hair. The element of winter that is most damaging to your hair is the lack of humidity. The dryness of the season can make your hair more brittle. Protect your natural hair and hair extensions by adding these easy winter hair care tips to your hair care routine.

GET DIRTY.

TRY TO KEEP THE HAIR WASHING TO A MINIMUM.

Excessive hair washing can strip your hair of its natural oils and leave it feeling dry, dull, and lifeless. This can get especially bad during the winter, as the cold air will only dry your hair out even further. Pro Tip: (when hair is at its “dirtiest point” take your boar bristle brush and drag the natural oils from your scalp down to the ends of your extensions. Hair extensions are essentially “dead” they need natural oils produced by the scalp to flourish.)

MASK UP!

USE A DEEP CONDITIONING TREATMENT ONCE A WEEK.

Especially during the winter months, your hair craves moisture and nutrients—as these can be stripped with the dry air or when washing your hair. You can help replenish what’s missing from your hair to make it stronger and healthier by using a deep conditioning treatment once a week.

PROTECT YO NECK (+HAIR) USING A HAT OR SCARF.

Silk or satin linings. For outdoor protection, it is best to wear a hat, headscarf, or hood made with silk or satin linings. They are best to use since they don’t absorb moisture and they don’t allow your hair strands to rub together like other materials such as cotton. By letting your long strands rub together, you are causing friction that leads to frizz, static, and tangles. You should always protect your hair and hair extensions while outdoors.

HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE!

Just like the rest of your body, your hair needs plenty of water to stay healthy and hydrated. Though it’s not hot outside, it’s just as easy to get dehydrated during the winter as it is during the summer. Use a vaporizer or humidifier in your bedroom at night to maintain moisture in your skin and hair.

THE MOM IN ME SAYS.

TAKE YOUR VITAMINS.

A vitamin and mineral supplement from a whole foods grocery store or health food store will help maintain nutrient levels in your natural hair. Use this tip year-round to retain luster and consistent hair growth. Diet makes a big difference in how your hair looks and feels. Eat nutritiously during cold periods.

OPT FOR AIRDRYING or HEATLESS CURLS

Not only can wet hair make you feel cold and uncomfortable while outside, but it can also actually cause a lot more damage than necessary during the winter. If it’s too cold outside, your hair can freeze and snap off.

HOT AF.

AVOID USING HOT TOOLS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

Avoid high-temperature blow dryers that dry your hair immediately. Consider lowering the temperature and fan speed of your hairdryer. If time permits, blow-dry at lower temperatures, let the hair rest for 15 to 20 minutes and then blow dry again to lengthen the time it takes to completely dry your hair and extensions.
